A love letter from the past

If you are reading this, I’m dead and my heart is beating in your father’s chest.

I trust him, Kosi. I have no doubt that he will make an exceptional young woman out of you.

Before you were born, I asked God that you will have the kindness of his heart, the beauty of his mind, the warmth in his eyes- they are the best I’ve seen in one human, the very best.

And now, I stare at your two-year-old face, I see his heart in you every time you smile at me and I couldn’t be happier that you are everything I asked from God and more.

Your father will teach you LOVE. The kind that adores all the glittering edges of your beauty, the kind you will find in yourself.

Just in case you haven’t realized it yet, hear me when I say that YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.

Your father will teach you to recognize the courage and nobility in sacrifice. He will tell you that cancer took my body but my heart lives in him so that he can live for you, live for us.

I will be alive in his chest Kosi. Every time you need to feel my love, you will find me in his heartbeat.

He is gold, a solid man and I know he will mold you into a diamond. You will have a mind of your own and he will teach you to trust it without a doubt in the world.

As confident as I know you will be, I hope you never stop trusting your father to catch you when you’re weak.

He may be a little annoying sometimes and if you are anything like me, you will find his laughter insanely weird but awkwardly satisfying.

He may also never stop forgetting his phone and car keys on the kitchen counter and he may never finish watching a movie without sleeping off halfway through.

He loves to sing, despite his hoarse voice and he may never get better at it, so he would mess up your favorite songs but you will love him regardless, you will love him for all that he is.

Your name is ‘Kosisochukwu’. In Igbo, it means, ‘However it Pleases God’. Whenever you’re hurting, remember your name and believe that whatever happens is exactly how it pleases God. Heal from your pain.

Shine Kosi, Shine.

With Love,
Your mother,
Chinenyenwa.
